Background of the study
Digital communication in Nigeria has spurred innovative morphosyntactic practices as users adapt language to suit online platforms. Facebook and Instagram, with their distinct modes of interaction, provide contrasting environments for language use. Facebook supports lengthy discussions with complex sentence structures, while Instagram favors succinct captions that often blend visual cues with abbreviated syntax (Okafor, 2024). This study examines the morphosyntactic patterns emerging on these platforms, focusing on how digital affordances shape sentence construction and grammatical choices among Nigerian users (Ibrahim, 2023). The research investigates factors such as user demographics, context, and platform constraints, and how they contribute to syntactic creativity and deviations from standard language norms. By comparing data from Facebook posts and Instagram captions, the study aims to reveal the underlying mechanisms of morphosyntactic variation in digital discourse, thus contributing to the broader understanding of language evolution in online spaces (Adebayo, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Although morphosyntactic innovation is evident in Nigerian digital communication, there is limited comparative research on how platforms like Facebook and Instagram influence language structure differently. Existing studies often address language change in isolation without comparing the syntactic and morphological outcomes across different media. This research gap limits the comprehensive understanding of how digital environments drive systematic morphosyntactic variation, thereby impeding the development of robust linguistic models for digital discourse (Chukwu, 2023).

Research questions
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides a comparative analysis of morphosyntactic patterns in Nigerian digital communication. Its findings will contribute to the understanding of digital language evolution, offering insights for linguists, educators, and digital media practitioners regarding the impact of online platforms on traditional language structures (Ibrahim, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study
The study is limited to analyzing morphosyntactic patterns in Facebook posts and Instagram captions among Nigerian users, excluding other digital or offline contexts.
